Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline (SSCGP) is an interstate natural gas transportation company, headquartered in Owensboro, KY.  SSCGP operates a 6,000-mile pipeline system transporting natural gas from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming and Colorado to markets in the Mid-continent.

Job # 17-0080 – Professional Licensed Surveyor – Joplin, MO

Position Information:

This position is based in Joplin, MO and reports directly to the Owensboro, KY based Leader of Drafting & Surveying, Project Engineering and is a member of a two-man field survey crew performing land survey activities for Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline. Works independently with minimal direction of the supervisor and has familiarity with the operation of GPS and conventional land surveying equipment.  Assists and performs surveys for pipeline route selection and right of way, site acquisitions and easements, support pipeline integrity projects and varying land survey needs.  Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels within and outside of the organization both verbally and in writing

Primary Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Perform topographic and boundary surveys, construction staking, and as-built surveys
  • Set survey monuments to establish legal boundaries including property lines, right-of-ways, easements, etc.
  • Uses existing plans, sketches, and public records to determine locations of existing survey monuments, as well as to place new monuments
  • Operates and maintains surveying equipment including GPS receivers, Total Stations, and Data Collectors
  • Record and provide clear and concise survey notes to drafting and engineering colleagues in accordance with company procedures
  • Performs various duties associated with the position as assigned
  • Operate a motor vehicle and navigate to numerous locations on the Company’s system
  • Clear brush, unload, load, carry survey equipment, set-up and utilization of surveying equipment 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work regular, extended hours including weekends and evenings with little or no notice
  • Ability to travel overnight by automobile and/or plane, sometimes for extended periods of up to two weeks
  • Ability to effectively handle stress that may arise unexpectedly
  • Extensive walking, clearing of brush and carrying equipment over rough terrain
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods in potentially extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to work around high noise levels using PPE
  • Ability to work around chemicals associated natural gas industry
  • Understanding of drawings and maps
  • Ability to read, understand and apply directions, policies, procedures and guidelines  Ability to effectively handle significant amounts of stress that arise unexpectedly for brief periods that may last several days up to several weeks
  • Overnight travel (25%-50%) is required



  • Possess requirements for PLS Licensing
  • Must be Licensed in a minimum of one of the following States: Kansas, Missouri or Oklahoma
  • Must possess Pipeline Surveying experience
  • Must have strong knowledge of GIS surveying technology
  • Operational experience with Trimble GPS receivers, Total Stations, and Data Collectors
  • Valid driver’s license and insurability
  • Intermediate skill level ability with Microsoft Office products
  • Demonstrated successful experience in problem solving skills and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience with data management
  • Experience reading and understanding drawings and maps
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal/written)
  • Strong leadership skills with successful experience guiding others in developing and achieving common goals
  • Experience working in both a scheduled/structured and unscheduled/unstructured, deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply directions, policies, procedures, guidelines, requirements, and regulations


  • Associates of Science or Applied Science
  • Possess Licenses in all the following States: Kansas, Missouri & Oklahoma
  • Knowledge of natural gas related industry
  • Knowledge of CAD systems
  • Experience sourcing pre-survey information from public records
  • Professional Licensed Surveyor (PLS)
