JOB DESCRIPTION: A nine-month faculty position responsible to the Dean, School of Applied Studies, and the Department Chair, Engineering Technology. Individual must be qualified to teach all aspects of surveying technology. In particular, this instructor’s duties will emphasize teaching the technologies supporting surveying today including current surveying equipment and surveying CAD software. Duties may include on- and off-campus day and evening classes. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, student advising, promoting and facilitating community awareness of the surveying and mapping program, curriculum development, and maintaining appropriate records and office hours. May involve some travel for professional development training.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Registered professional land surveyor or experienced surveying technician.

Experience in, or willingness to learn, integrated GPS and GIS technologies in a surveying context

Bachelors degree preferred but not required.

At least 3 years experience in land surveying or related activity.

Teaching experience preferred but not required.

Student centered in methodology and classroom procedures.

Willingness to utilize distance learning strategies and latest multimedia technologies.

SALARY: Commensurate with established schedule.

Licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor is required in all fifty states and the U. S. territories. To obtain licensure, many states now require a degree in Surveying and Mapping or related sciences along with four years of experience working under the supervision of a licensed professional survey. Kansas is one of those states.

Employment in surveying and mapping covers many areas including:

• Land Surveying – which is traditional boundary surveys relating to land ownership issues and measurements of the earth’s surface.
• Geodesy - which includes mathematics, physics and astronomy
• Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing – which utilizes aircraft, satellites, film and digital camera equipment
• Global Positioning System – which involves satellites and 3D positioning with earth-based equipment for surveying, mapping and navigation.
• Geographic Information Systems – which is an information framework that is spatial and geographically related.
• Cartography – which includes creating road maps, topo maps and navigation charts.

Salaries, benefits and compensation vary with the locale, the employee’s primary assignment, the size of the firm and the availability of personnel. Most surveying and mapping personnel, however, enjoy median to higher salaries for areas in which they are employed.
